In 2002, a division of major sponsors was started for this tournament in memory of Chuck Cartwright.  Chuck passed away on July 3, 2002.  Chuck was a pioneer to downrigger fishing in Michigan during the late 1960's, and he owned Wolverine Tackle which made several donations to the Classic tournament.

A major sponsor is any sponsor that donates over $1000 or more in cash or prizes toward the Classic Prize structure.  In doing this, the major sponsor is allowed to choose one of the tournament contestants to fish for them in the Classic for the Major Sponsor Trophy.
