CLUB OFFICERS ELECTED at June Board of Directors Meeting

The annual election of officers was held at the June Board of Directors Meeting. Mike Warshefski was elected to the President position. Mike has been active in the club for several years, and has been on the Board of Directors for three years. He has been the Boat Tournament Chairman for two years and has also been in charge of our advertising position. Mike has also been an active volunteer for Salmon Stakes, Blue Water Classic, club picnic, and Fishing Forever. I'm sure that Mike will do a great job as our club president.

Also elected to Officer Positions were Judy Ogden, 1st Vice President, Vic Ruehle, 2nd Vice President, Paul Baker, Treasurer, Bill Lill, Corresponding Secretary, and Fred Witter as the Recording Secretary. These officers all are returning to positions that they held on the previous board.

FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT — Mike Warshefeski

Greetings!

I am honored to be the new president of BWSA. My goals are to:
    1. Continue to support the fellowship between people who share the common interest of fishing and water preservation.
    2. Have our club reach out and promote the basic sport of fishing and tournament fishing, like the Blue Water Classic.
    3. To solicit and acquire more participation from our new members and from our founding and early members.

If you have ideas, or can help with these goals, I would appreciate you giving me a call at 987-5881.

I have confidence in the Board Members to help do the work involved to run this organization and function as a voice in the community and state.

I know I'm glad BWSA was here for me when I needed them. Thanks everyone!

Thank you to Preston Schroeder, Jr. for a fine job as the president. He will be Tournament Director for the rest of the year.

A special thanks to Debbie Livingston, for the time you've spent promoting the club.

Please make a mental note, all board and membership meetings will now be held at Acheson Ventures Maritime Center at Desmond Landing. Thank you to all who helped making this happen. Thank you to Acheson Ventures for allowing us to meet in their facility.

GREAT WEBSITES TO MAKE YOUR FISHING TRIP MORE SUCCESSFUL

Scott Torello gave a great presentation to the membership at the May meeting. With the help of his laptop computer, Scott demonstrated how the internet can help you find fish and get to the fishing spots. The upcoming Steelhead fishing at Erieau, Ontario, was the main topic to help members become familiar with that great fishery. A great website for that port is www.erieaumarina. com. This will give fishing updates, as well as links to other sites that will help. Something else that may be beneficial is to Google "Michigan Seagrant Coast Watch" for their site. It will give you current information on water temp, clarity, wave height as well as other information that may help catch you fish and keep you safe. A great website with information on warm water as well as cold water fishing is www.michigan-sportsman.com. At this site, you can read information posted by members to help you get to the right spot and use the right stuff to catch fish.

HOOKED ON FISHING ... NOT ON DRUGS! 2009

Move over fishermen and lend some space to some new anglers. Again this year, our club sponsored a fishing program for seventh-graders to show them that there can be many alternatives to drug use; one of them could be fishing. Students in Erik Barden's classes were offered the opportunity to participate in a fishing club that met before school seven times. During their meetings, they had activities that taught fish adaptations and fish identification and lessons in ecology that covered learning about watersheds and why we protect them as well as fish habitat capacity and management. Conservation Officer, Ben Lasher, visited the group one morning to talk about fishing ethics and laws and why they are so important.

There were also hands on activities that the kids really enjoyed. They made in-line spinners and tied wet and dry flies under the instruction of Fly Fishing Instructor, Victor Ruehle. Another activity, led by Fred Witter, was casting practice, where the students became familiar with spinning rods. The program ended with an all day outing at the Kimball Township Park. The rainy, windy weather didn't take away the enthusiasm as the kids got right to fishing for Bass and Bluegill. Our club provided each student with a great t-shirt that they each wore proudly that day, in most cases under a coat or rain slicker! Besides the equipment and bait, we also gave the kids pizza, chips, and pop for lunch, and each took away a great raffle prize at the end of the day. Rods and reels, tackle boxes, lures, bobbers, hooks, pliers and other prizes were claimed by each of the kids that won the prize in a drawing. I'm sure there isn't a better way to promote fishing and to pass it on to the next generation than through a program like this.
